How 2v2 works

Welcome to 2v2 BETA

Two skaters and a goalie a side, each skater played by a different person on their own computer. Everyone on this page sees the same rink.

  1. Take a slot. Sign in and click an empty jersey (Home or Away). Pick your NHL team for your side.
  2. Press any button on your controller (or keyboard). Your star lights up: that star is you on the ice.
  3. The host starts the game. The first person to take a slot is the host and presses Start when everyone is ready.
  4. Stay active. A slot is held for 60 seconds at a time; press a button or I'm still here to keep it.

Why at least two people? 2v2 is played online between people, so a game needs at least two players. The CPU fills any empty slot, so you can start with two or three, but it is best with four: share the page and fill the rink. Can't find anyone? Play on this computer runs up to four controllers on one machine.

There are two rinks. A game already on? Start a new game in the other rink, queue for the next game, or watch it live. Every game is saved to 94 TV for replay.

Beta: 2v2 is brand new. Games can stall or end early, and stats and replays may change or be reset while we test. Please report anything odd with Report a Bug or in the lobby chat.

How 2v2 works

  1. Pick a jersey. Everyone on this page sees the same rink. Home has two slots, Away has two. Sign in, then click an empty jersey to join it, or another one to switch.
  2. Press any button on the controller you will play with. Your jersey lights up in your star colour: that star is you on the ice. A keyboard works too (arrows + A/S/D/Enter, or IJKL + Z/X/C/Right Shift).
  3. The host starts. The first person to take a slot is the host (★ HOST on their jersey; their chat messages are highlighted). With everyone ready, the host presses Start game; with two or three players the CPU plays the empty skaters. The host can remove a player who is holding up the rink.
  4. Game full or on? Start a new game in the other rink (Rink 1 and Rink 2 run side by side), queue for the next game, or watch it live. When people are waiting, the winners stay on and the losing side goes to the back of the queue. Every game is saved to 94 TV.
  5. Stay active. While you wait, your slot is held for 60 seconds, shown as a countdown on your jersey. Press a button on your controller, change your team or click I'm still here to reset it. If it runs out, the slot opens for someone else.

2v2 rules: 5-minute periods, penalties off, offsides off, no line changes, manual goalies. Controllers 1 and 3 play Home, 2 and 4 Away; the navy and pink stars are the centres. With three players, or two on the same side, the game puts that side at home. Online, a player who drops out leaves their skater standing until the game ends; if the host leaves, the game ends for everyone. Play on this computer runs a game with up to four controllers on one computer.
